Keeping Your Pets Safe from Fleas & Ticks

Keeping Your Pets Safe from Fleas & Ticks

Summertime means lots of pets and people getting together. It also means optimum time for the blood-sucking parasites (sounds like a horror movie!) to come around. In this video, our Prestige Animal Hospital Veterinarians discuss tick safety for pets and people.

Hi there, Dr. Aponte and Dr. Sudeep Wahla from Prestige Animal Hospital here.

We wanted to talk to you guys today, a little bit more about things that you may see this summer, especially fleas and ticks.

So with the rain that we had a few months ago, we had a lot of humidity. So these creatures actually love that, and they're thriving very well in the environment. So if you have any grass, any dirt or even fake grass in your yard, they can actually survive there. Pretty much they survive on blood. So if your pet goes out there, just to have fun or do his necessities, they can actually find them and they can be dragged into the house.

When they feed on the pets or us, they can actually infect us with different diseases like Lyme disease or also even anemia. So there's plenty of products out there that definitely you can use to prevent them in the yard. So check with your local supply source and make sure it's a pet friendly product.

But definitely we encourage you to use a product like Bravecto in terms of your pet safety, so you can control fleas and ticks for as long as three months.

So ticks love to hide in big, shady areas. So if you have any debris in your yard, tall grass, make sure you clear it out. Check underneath it.

Regular inspections of your pets are really important. In California, we have fleas and ticks all year round, so make sure you keep them on protection all year around. And keep an eye for those little guys.
